9-storey Manhattan penthouse put on the market for USD110 million

A historic 9-storey penthouse apartment at New York City landmark Woolworth Building is being offered for sale for USD110 million, a record for lower Manhattan.

The 883.8 sqm luxury home inside the 58-storey tower, which was once the world’s tallest building until 1930, also features four bedrooms, its own private lobby and elevator, wine cellar, observation deck and a 54.26 sqm rooftop terrace that overlooks downtown Manhattan, Bloomberg reported.

Developed by Alchemy Properties—the company that bought the top 30 storeys of the former office tower in 2012 to build luxury apartments—the record-breaking penthouse is the most expensive condominium that has been put on sale in the area, according to Jonathan Miller, president of appraiser Miller Samuel Inc.

“We’ve seen rapid absorption downtown, but this project is unlike anything that’s come online,” Miller told Bloomberg. “The price is more reflective of the unique historical nature of the property” than its neighbourhood. The Cass Gilbert-designed neo-Gothic building was declared a United States historical landmark 48 years ago.

The penthouse, which occupies levels 50 through 58, will welcome interested bidders from around the world, including potential buyers from the Middle East, China and Russia, this fall, according to CentralMaine.com. The new owners will be able to move in by 2016.
